Haptics feedback technology overview

iPhone 4s: LRA coin vibrator (ifixit)

Haptics feedback has become an essential function for a majority of mobile & wearable devices. NFP provides diversified cell phone vibrator motor products to implement cost-effective haptics feedback solutions. These motor products are classified into linear vibration motors(LRA) and ceramic vibrator motors.

The linear vibrate motor features small size, low power consumption, and the relatively simple drive. It reduces the cost of the total solution and ensures high product reliability. The ceramic motor features a better haptics experience and faster response, more suitable for high-end products.Tactile feedback devices were being developed in 1990. This technology is now being commercialized in many applications such as consumer devices, smartphones, tablets, the gaming of

consoles, smart watches, automotive touchscreen dashboards, medical and healthcare devices and instruments, some industrial devices, and in military and aerospace applications. Haptics is a basic channel of communication which functions through the real sense of touch. It acts as an interface between the haptics enabled device and the user. This technology is not new to the market as scientists have developed and used haptics enabled devices for many applications; for example, a robotic tele-operation haptic device was used in the nuclear environment in 1954. Haptics technology especially force feedback technology was developed later and used in various devices such as in electro-mechanical arm in molecular docking, force feedback gloves like the Phantom Arm,and many more. Consistent R&D activities have taken place in this sector, it is now resulting in technological advancements and innovation.

Force feedback haptic technology

Haptics technology is majorly categorized into tactile haptic feedback and the force feedback. Tactile / touch feedback is associated with the sensations felt by skin such as surface texture, temperature, and vibration. This segmentation can be done on the basis of senses felt by the human being. Force feedback is associated with muscles and tendons, which create physical vibration aspects such as direction force, weight, and mechanical compliance. Both of these technologies are used together or separately in a lot of applications. Four major components should be take into consideration, which help the haptics system function, Including actuators, drivers and controllers, sensors, and software. Combining these components into a particular product, the haptics feedback is created to enhance the user experience.

The next generation of linear resonant actuators

Apple watch with taptic engine

Our Linear Resonant Actuators (LRA) vibration motors are an excellent choice for haptic application requiring a device with high reliability and exceptionally long life LRA s have an internal mass that oscillates back and forth along the X-axis at its resonant frequency. They are an excellent alternative to the brushless vibration motors as the only internal parts that are subjected to wear / failure are the spring. Unlike conventional brushed DC vibration motors, linear resonant actuators must be driven by an AC signal at the devices resonant frequency. There are companies make IC drivers for linear vibration motors that supply the correct drive signals and contain a library of haptic effects you can choose from. TI company makes LRA drivers IC s. We can supply you with an evaluation board that incorporates the TI DRV8601, DRV2603, haptic driver IC. Contact us for info. It should be noted that unlike brushed ERM vibration motors, varying the amplitude of the applied voltage will only change the amplitude of the vibration force, not only the frequency of vibration. The frequency of vibration is fixed at the LRA s resonant frequency which in the case of our LRA s is either 180 or 200 Hz. Due the LRA s Hi-Q , applying a frequency above or below the resonant frequency of the LRA will result in the LRA producing a lower vibration amplitude or if far from the resonant frequency.

What is Taptic Engine?

Taptic Engine, a linear actuator inside Apple Watch that produce haptic feedback. In less technical terms, it taps you on the wrist. Whenever you receive an alert or notification, or perform a function like turning the Digital Crown or pressing down on the display, you feel a tactile sensation that s recognisably different for each kind of interaction. Combined with subtle audio cues from the specially engineered speaker driver, the Taptic Engine creates a discreet, sophisticated and nuanced experience by engaging more of your senses. It also enables some entirely new, intimate ways for you to communicate with other Apple Watch wearers. You can get someone s attention with a gentle tap. Or even send something as personal as your heartbeat. The Taptic Engine is powered by a custom linear resonant actuator that produces small vibrations by moving a mass back and forth along a single axis. Unlike rotating mass vibrators commonly used in older cellphone applications, LRAs can be manipulated to provide users with different sensations, from light taps to strong continuous rumbles.

A teardown of the iPhone 4S

The video below shows a teardown of the iPhone 4S, which used a linear resonant actuator attached to the device enclosure to provide vibrotactile feedback.

Many modern cell phones use an LRA instead of other types of vibration motors in order to produce a wider range of vibrotactile effects with less power. The steam video game controller from valve also makes use of linear resonant actuators to provide trackpads with haptic feedback.

Haptic vibrators: Awaiting killer apps to drive growth

Today, more and more mobile devices are adopting haptic technologies to enhance user experience with tactile feedback such as dome press simulation and key press confirmation. This new sense of touch brought by haptics adds another dimension of interaction with your mobile device. The adoption of haptics continues to grow into many product categories. Haptics devices are also ideal in locations where audio notifications might not be heard, such as the subway, buses, or busy streets. These haptic features are made possible by electric vibrator motors. Traditionally, Eccentic Rotating Motors (ERMs) and Linear Resonant Actuators (LRAs) have been dominant in mobile handsets. These conventional technologies were originally developed for silent alerts, but have been adopted for haptics since they were already present in most phones. NFP s vibrator products include haptics vibrators and linear vibrators adopted in smartphones. All vibrator products are manufactured in Shenzhen through semi- automated and fully-automated production lines.
