Linear Resonant Actuator (LRAs) is becoming more and more popular in tactile applications. As substitutes for Eccentric Rotating Mass (ERM) vibration motors, they have several obvious advantages: they provide super faster response, higher vibration efficiency, and provide longer life spans. Combined with the necessary drivers, they can provide more advanced haptic effects.


Generally the LRA motors are driven by an AC (alternating current), that's different from the traditional coin vibration motor. It has a specific peak amplitude and a specific frequency, and they are related to the structure of the motor. The LRAs driven by different frequency will cause different peak amplitude. Only when the LRAs are driven by the resonance frequency, it will create the biggest amplitude. Also the voltage will affect LRA's vibration strength too. So the resonant frequency and proper voltage are the key points to take care when design with the LRA motor.


The LRAs can driven by two ways typically. First, you can use a TI's IC DRV26XX series to drive them. Second, when during the prototyping or evaluation period, you can use a sine wave that generated from a signal generator to drive the LRAs. It's easy to operate, and can evaluate the linear vibration motor in a quick time. If you decide to use the linear resonant actuator, you should use the specific IC to drive the LRA. Because the IC can auto resonance with the linear vibration motor, and will create a biggest vibration strength.
